Spirulina is a microscopic algae that grows in the waters of lakes in Africa, Central, and South America. It contains up to 60% protein. It is a source of natural iodine, selenium, iron, valuable B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B12), and unsaturated fatty acids. The protein it contains is composed of up to 18 amino acids, 8 of which are essential amino acids, meaning those that the body cannot produce itself and must be obtained from food. Due to its high-quality protein, spirulina is popular in vegan and vegetarian diets.
The iron contained in spirulina plays a role in the body's transport of oxygen to cells. It is also involved in the production of red blood cells and hemoglobin and supports the proper functioning of the immune system. It's worth noting that iron from this algae is better absorbed than iron from animal sources.
Iodine is involved in maintaining normal cognitive function and the functioning of the nervous system and also contributes to the maintenance of healthy skin. Selenium contributes to the maintenance of healthy hair and nails, supports the normal function of the immune system and thyroid, and protects cells from oxidative stress.
Vitamin B6, found in spirulina, contributes to the maintenance of normal energy metabolism and normal red blood cell production. It helps reduce feelings of fatigue and maintain normal psychological functions. Vitamin B12 contributes to the function of the nervous and immune systems.
Spirulina contains two types of pigments: green chlorophyll, blue phycocyanin, and antioxidants such as beta-carotene and vitamin E. Thanks to these, it has antioxidant and body-cleansing properties.
