Supermarket strawberries or organic? What’s really in the summer classics

Erdbeeren aus dem Supermarkt oder BIO? Was wirklich in den Sommer-Klassikern steckt

June is here, and with it comes the time we've been looking forward to all year: the stalls on street corners are overflowing with bright red strawberries and crunchy cherries. They smell like summer, taste sweet, and end up in our shopping baskets by the kilo. But this is exactly where the trap snaps shut. What looks like the perfect vitamin bomb often turns out to be a chemical cocktail in the lab.

In the world of nutrition, there is a term everyone who likes to reach for fresh fruit in summer should know: the "Dirty Dozen."

Find out here why our favorite summer fruits are at the top of this list and how you can protect yourself and your family.

The Sad Truth About the "Dirty Dozen"

Every year, the American Environmental Working Group (EWG), together with European control authorities, examines common types of fruit and vegetables for their pesticide load. The result is astonishingly consistent: conventionally grown fruit with a particularly thin skin tops the negative list.

Strawberries have held the undisputed number one spot for years, closely followed by spinach, nectarines, apples, and cherries. Even after thorough washing, residues of two or more pesticides can be detected in over 90% of conventional samples. These chemicals are supposed to keep insects and fungi away, but they end up on our plates and burden the intestines and metabolism.

Why Strawberries Soak Up Pesticides Like a Sponge

Nature has protected some fruits better than others. A banana or an avocado has a thick skin – they belong to the "Clean Fifteen" because the spray chemicals hardly penetrate the flesh.

Strawberries and cherries do not have this protective layer. Their skin is extremely thin and porous. Additionally, strawberries grow directly on the damp ground, making them susceptible to mold. The consequence: in conventional cultivation, a huge amount of spraying is done – directly onto the fruit, which soaks up the chemicals like blotting paper. So you inevitably eat the pollutants along with them.

The Organic Alternative: Why the Difference Can Be Tasted and Measured

If you now think you have to completely give up summer enjoyment, you can breathe a sigh of relief. The solution is simple and consistent: Certified ORGANIC quality.

In organic farming, chemical-synthetic pesticides and artificial fertilizers are strictly prohibited. Instead, farmers use natural crop rotations and beneficial insects to protect the plants. This has three unbeatable advantages for you:

  • Real taste: Organic fruits contain less water and more secondary plant compounds. They taste as intense as strawberries should taste.
  • More antioxidants: Because the organic plant has to defend itself against enemies without chemical help, it produces significantly more of its own defense substances (polyphenols), which act as anti-inflammatories in your body.
  • Clear conscience: You don't burden your liver and intestines with unnecessary toxins – real clean eating.

Practical Summer Tip: How to Wash Your Fruit Properly

If you don't have organic strawberries on hand, don't just scrub them under cold water. That does almost nothing against water-insoluble pesticides.

The baking soda bath: Place the fruit in a bowl of cold water for 12 to 15 minutes and add one teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Studies show that this alkaline solution can break down a large portion of surface pesticides. Then rinse thoroughly with clear water!

Don't let unnecessary chemicals spoil your summer and berry season. Your body deserves food that nourishes it, not burdens it.
